Austin Business Journal - by G. Scott Thomas , Dallas Business Journal January 25, 2011

The Lone Star state outpaced most of the nation when it comes to job creation, a new government report said.

Texas set the pace in both December and all of 2010, adding 20,000 nonfarm jobs during the past month and 230,800 in the past year, according to a report issued Tuesday morning from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Austin-San Marcos region added 15,200 jobs year-over-year last month, and has a 6.8 percent unemployment rate.

In the report Tuesday, 36 states suffered short-term job losses between November and December. But, 43 states came out ahead for the year. Click here for a database with the latest employment totals for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. All figures are seasonally adjusted.

South Carolina and California were the runners-up in short-term employment growth between November and December, adding 9,000 and 4,900 jobs, respectively.

California (up 87,500 jobs) and Pennsylvania (up 65,600) finished right behind Texas in long-term job growth between December 2009 and the same month in 2010.
